Meningitis B Vaccination, Explained

Meningitis B is a bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning). It is not common, but it can become serious within hours, and older teenagers and young adults, especially students in their first year, are among the people most at risk.

Babies have had the MenB vaccine on the NHS since 2015, which means most current students and adults have never been vaccinated. The MenACWY jab many students get from their GP does not cover group B, so a private MenB course is an option if you are not eligible for a free NHS vaccine.

Meningitis B Vaccination: Your Questions Answered

I am a student. Can I get the MenB vaccine free?

You might. In 2026/27 NHS Scotland is offering a time-limited MenB programme to under-25s starting their first university course, first-year college students under 25 in shared accommodation, and anyone born between 1 March 2008 and 28 February 2009 or in S6 during 2025/26. If you qualify, use NHS Lothian's free clinics (first doses until 31 December 2026); our private service is for people who are not eligible.

How many doses do I need?

Most people aged 11 and over need two doses at least one month apart, and protection is not complete until you have had both. Each dose is £125, so the full course is £250. If you had MenB doses as a child, bring any records and the pharmacist will confirm what you need.

I have had the MenACWY vaccine. Do I still need MenB?

MenACWY does not protect against group B, so it does not replace the MenB vaccine. The two are separate vaccines, and many students have both.

Is it too late if term has already started?

No. The ideal is to finish both doses before moving into halls, but completing the course during your first term still gives you protection for the rest of your time at university.

What side effects should I expect?

A sore, swollen or red arm, headache, tiredness, aching muscles or joints and feeling sick are the most common, and usually pass within a day or two. Serious allergic reactions are rare, and the pharmacist will explain aftercare before you leave.

Is there anyone who should not have the vaccine, or should wait?

Tell the pharmacist about any allergies, including latex, and if you have reacted to a vaccine before, have a fever on the day, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners. They will check whether you should go ahead, wait or speak to your GP first.

How much is Meningitis B Vaccination, and what does the price include?

£125.00. This covers both the consultation and the treatment, with no additional fee. We confirm the price with you before anything goes ahead, and every price is listed in full on our prices page. If you would like help choosing between options, call 0131 225 7770 and ask to speak to a pharmacist.

Can I book Meningitis B Vaccination without seeing a GP first?

Yes. Meningitis B Vaccination is a private service you can book directly with us, with no GP referral and no need to be registered with a nearby practice. If your needs would be better met by a GP or hospital, we will tell you clearly and point you in the right direction.

Can I have Meningitis B Vaccination done in central Edinburgh?

Yes. Meningitis B Vaccination is available at Forrest Pharmacy, 45 Forrest Road, Edinburgh EH1 2QP, as part of our General Vaccinations. We are in the city centre, a short walk from the Old Town, Southside and Newington, with bus routes stopping nearby. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Book online or call 0131 225 7770.

Can I just walk in for Meningitis B Vaccination?

Walk-ins are welcome, and we keep appointments available each day for people who need to be seen quickly. Booking ahead, online or on 0131 225 7770, is the best way to secure a time that suits you. If you are unsure whether this is the right service, ask to speak to a pharmacist when you call.
